So this is one of my favorite Annunciation scenes in art history, in no small part because of the cringe-worthy creep factor in this painting.  I mean, Mary doesn’t exactly look thrilled to have Gabriel there pointing his phallic lilies at her womb.  What is in part interesting to me is that this painting has many of the correct symbols for an Annunciation scene. The blue cloth of honor denoting Mary’s royal status, the lilies and white clothing denoting her virtue, the halo—all these things are present and accounted for. But Rosetti didn’t exactly have churches lining up to put his pieces in their spaces.  It’s kind of a threatening painting. Gabriel is shown as rather predatory with his hand and lily crossing into her space (usually Mary and Gabriel as separated in Annunciation scenes), and Mary seems to be shrinking not only from him, but also his proposition.  It’s such a different interpretation of the Annunciation that it really resonates with me. What if Mary was a little bit hesitant about her situation? Joseph could have decided to divorce her when he discovered she was pregnant, not to mention all of the other social ramifications for her peculiar situation. I really like the idea that she may have paused at this idea, but gone ahead with it as she trusted in God to make all things right.
